Pragmatic Peculiarities ofIidioms Interpreting

Wewill now take a close look at some peculiarities ofidiomatic expressions. An important fact that has to be stressed is that phrasal verbs are not only colloquial words, as many people think. They can appear in formal style and in slang. They can appear in poetry or in the language of Dickens and business letters.

What, then, is an idiom? We may say that an idiom is some quantity of elements which, taken in the same place, mean something unlike from the individual expressions of the idiom when they are found separately. Other idiomatic expression are completely common and reasonable in their grammar and vocabulary. English is very rich in idioms. In fact, it is hard to speak or write English without using idioms. An English native speaker is very often not aware that he is using an idiom; maybe he does not even understand that an idiom which he applies is grammatically wrong. A non-native learner makes the correct use of idiomatic English one of his main goals, and the fact that some idioms are illogical or grammatically wrong causes him difficulty. Only careful study and exact learning will help.
It cannot be explained why a particular idiom has developed an unusual arrangement or choice of words. The idiom has been fixed by long usage as is sometimes understood from the vocabulary.
